Whether a restore was actually completed.</li><li><strong>Who has access that should not?</strong> Leavers, old contractors, service accounts, shared logins.</li><li><strong>What are we spending, and on what?</strong> Licence counts drift. Look at what has been added to the network since January. Check which machines are still on an operating system that will be supported this time next year. And look at whether your documented recovery plan still describes the systems you actually run.</p><h3>Why now</h3><p>Doing this in July gives you two clear quarters to budget and schedule anything you find, rather than discovering it in December when everyone is away and the year-end spend is already committed.</p>

It is now urgent, the usual engineer is away, and the person covering has never seen that system. What should have been an hour becomes two days.</p><h3>What to do before it happens</h3><p>Write down who covers what while people are away, and make sure that person has the access to actually do it. Check expiry dates on certificates, domains and licences that fall in the next three months. Confirm a restore works, not just that the backup ran. And clear the small deferred jobs now, while they are still small.</p>

<p>Attackers pay attention to the calendar. Out-of-office replies tell them who is away and for how long. Skeleton staffing means approvals get rushed. And more people are working from places and devices that are not the office.</p><h3>The seasonal weak points</h3><p>Requests to change bank details arrive while the person who would normally question them is away. Staff check email on personal laptops and home networks with no protection on them. And an out-of-office auto-reply naming a colleague hands over the next target for free.</p><h3>Sensible precautions</h3><p>Agree that payment detail changes are verified by phone, on a number you already had, no exceptions and no matter who appears to be asking. Keep auto-replies vague. Make sure remote access requires multi-factor authentication. And confirm that someone is actually watching alerts while the usual people are away, rather than assuming it.</p>
